I think you misunderstood this song. Lyrics are by the drummer as were all Rush Lyrics. In this song he is talking about his dislike of fame and the fan worship that went with it. It is best shown in the line "I cant pretend a stranger is a long awaited friend" Neil was very private guy an Introvert ill equipped to handle people's adulation because in his mind he is just another guy with faults and problems. The underlying theme is that the world is a stage and we are merely players just as he is merely a player in a band not worthy of adulation. Just another human being doing what he likes to do.

Thanks for doing this I have followed Caitlynne for a long time and like her voice very much she knows how to touch a heart with it and she writes wonderfully, I havent listen to this for a long time now the first time really hit me deeply I used to listen to this on a regular basis as a way to cope with my situation then I listened to it less as I healed a little more each day, so now listening to it now takes me back a little bit but not in a bad way just as a reminder of how far I have come on my healing journey I listen with different ears at this point but it still hits deep and your right its complicated to describe t anyone that hasnt experienced it. What it meant for me when I was a kid was family. My uncles and my pops played Seger all the time. There was something about that VOICE echoing in the cold air at night in the woods while camping.
